BYD Replaces Mercedes as German Taxi Mainstay

1. Mercedes Steps Back: An Era's Symbol Fades

For decades, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class was almost synonymous with German taxis. The row of beige vehicles lined up at Frankfurt Airport arrivals was many travelers' first impression of Germany. But this pattern, sustained for decades, is being rewritten.

1.1 The Data Cliff: From 1,730 to 497

In 2024, new registrations of Mercedes E-Class taxis in Germany plummeted from 1,730 in the same period of the previous year to 497—a drop of roughly 71%. Its share of the German taxi market also slid from 52% in 2019 to 38% in 2023. By August 2024, only 8 Mercedes taxis were newly registered across all of Germany that month.

1.2 A Voluntary Exit Under the Luxury Strategy

The decline was no accident. Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius pushed the brand toward global luxury positioning, deciding to stop offering factory-converted taxi versions and to discontinue special discounts for taxi operators. A Mercedes manager told Germany's Handelsblatt plainly: "Taxis do not fit the brand's luxury image."

But the deeper logic is the economics: Germany registers only about 6,000–7,000 new taxis each year—a limited market with thin margins. At the same time, German local authorities are accelerating taxi electrification; major cities such as Hamburg have mandated that, from January 1, 2025, newly registered taxis and rental vehicles must be zero-emission models.

2. BYD Takes the Baton: Riding the Wave of Electrification

Against the dual window of policy pressure and Mercedes' exit, BYD saw its opening.

2.1 The July Offensive: Models + Commercial Terms + Conversion Network

On July 22, 2026, BYD officially launched a market offensive in Germany targeting taxi and rental companies. Carsten Schopf, BYD's B2B director for Germany, said the push combines attractive commercial terms, multiple electrified models, and a nationwide network of conversion partners.

2.2 Seal 06 DM-i Wagon: Tailor-Made for Europe

The flagship of the first wave is the Seal 06 DM-i Wagon—BYD's first station wagon built specifically for the European market, about 4.84 meters long and positioned as a mid-size vehicle. It carries the fifth-generation DM-i plug-in hybrid system, with a pure-electric range of up to 100 km and a combined range of up to 1,350 km. According to Taxi Today's real-world test, the WLTP-cycle electric range is about 100 km, and with a 65-liter fuel tank it can exceed 1,300 km of total range. For taxi operators, that means zero emissions in the city and no need for frequent recharging on long trips. BYD will later add battery-electric models such as the ATTO 3 EVO and SEALION 7.

2.3 Four Local Converters + 100 Units in Standing Stock

To meet Germany's strict commercial-vehicle regulations, BYD partnered with four local specialist conversion firms: DIE Transform (based in Nümbrecht), INTAX (Oldenburg), Heedfeld (Berlin), and Reuss (Hamburg). They handle body repainting and wrapping, installing taximeters, roof advertising signs and emergency alarm systems, and replacing interiors with stain-resistant, easy-to-clean materials. BYD also works with DIE Transform to keep about 100 converted vehicles in standing stock, shortening delivery lead times.

3. Not Just Germany: BYD's Overseas Taxi Footprint

This is not BYD's first foray into taxis abroad. It entered London in 2014, becoming the local market's first all-electric taxi fleet supplier; since then its business has expanded to Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Thailand, the UAE, India and beyond, with BYD taxis now operating in over 10 European countries. In Germany, BYD is also expanding its dealer network, aiming to build around 300 outlets by the end of 2026.

4. In Conclusion: Partner with SudiAuto to Become a BYD Importer

From London to Frankfurt, BYD is turning "electric taxis" into a global calling card. Its product strength and service system now have the capacity to replace traditional luxury brands in mature markets—this is not just a shift in Germany's taxi industry, but an opening for global importers to reconsider their supplier choices.

As BYD's Chinese vehicle-export partner, SudiAuto can provide overseas importers with one-stop support spanning model selection, export customs clearance, and logistics delivery. If you are evaluating the introduction of BYD models, or wish to become the BYD importer in your market, please contact us; we will provide a tailored cooperation plan and quotation based on your target market and procurement scale.
